Goal
Energy renovation – Enhancement of existing buildings – Unique housing units
Status
2019 - Completed
In order to preserve the qualities of the existing building, the works are kept to an absolute minimum and carried out with a focus on enhancing and conserving the original structure. Any necessary transformations and adaptations will, wherever possible, be reversible. The development project aims to offer the best compromise between use and space by highlighting the original unconventional layouts.
The apartments feature a living room on the “noble” facade with a direct view of Place Roger Salengro and the Prefecture. The new interventions are decidedly contemporary to avoid mimicking the past and to reveal the existing features.
To preserve the original volumes while allowing for the creation of new housing typologies with modern kitchen and bathroom spaces, the project includes sub-volumes: “wooden boxes.” These are differentiated by existing partitions and linings, with a ceiling height that leaves the moldings exposed, placed on a structure independent of the floorboards. The reversibility of this work already anticipates the future adaptability of the building.
The windows represent a significant challenge. Considering their quantity and quality, a case-by-case strategy is adopted. Those that are inoperative or defective are replaced with double-glazed wooden windows that respect the original design. Others are repaired, adjusted, and repainted.
